Outline of opening sequence and intended affect

In this blog post I will be giving the outline of my opening sequence and the intended affect I want it to have on the audience.

Due to my movie being part of the sporting drama genre, more specifically part of the redemption subgenera of sporting dramas, I will want to portray my protagonist as a hard working and extremely talented up and coming rugby player.

My opening scene will start with an establishing shot of a rugby pitch in a frosty early morning, with the time and date in the bottom left corner of the screen. The time will be early in the morning the camera will then show a young man walking towards the changing rooms without anyone else in site.  This scene is meant to show the dedication the young man has to rugby, by showing the time allowing the audience to know he's came hours before practice and the establishing shot will show there's not another person in site.

There would also be an establishing shot of the changing rooms. The protagonist slowly marches towards the changing rooms with headphones over his ear, the quite hum of the diegetic music and be heard however no words can be figured out. He walks into the changing room, the lights are up there would be a close up of him turning the lights on this will further amplify that he is the first person at the rugby club. The protagonist walks down the long corridor, further emphasising the emptiness and loneliness of the scene.

The protagonist will then walk into the changing room, sit down and take his rugby equipment out. He takes his headphones out of his phone the diegetic music can now clearly be heard. The music I will be using will be suitable for the genre and also for the sport. It will need to be a quick tempo, aggressive and empowering song. The protagonist would then pick up his old dirty boots and stare into them showing his connection with the sport.

There would then be a dissolve into a rugby scene, this will catch the audience off guard and will also show the quickness of the sport of rugby, throwing the audience into a game, However it will go tragically go wrong as the protagonist will immediately gets tackled leading to the screen going back the ambulance/ hospital noises playing in the background.

I will may also have a small section which could have some type of narration over it. Praising the protagonist at his rugby skills and dedication as a mean to bring the audience closer to the protagonist therefor making the tragic injury more devastating.
